Our fifth Blue Ridge WYRD oral storytelling open mic happens on Saturday, November 15th.
The show starts at 7pm so come early (starting at 6:30) to sign up and grab a seat.
WHAT IS AN ORAL STORYTELLING OPEN MIC?
It’s simply telling a story from the heart or mind, not reading it from printed papers. Everyone who signs up gets 8 minutes to tell a story… any story.
WHAT KIND OF STORIES ARE ALLOWED?
Mostly anything. It can be fact, it can be fiction, it can be a combination of the two. It can be a favorite myth or a crazy experience you had in your life. We’ve all known folks who can tell a good story – around the kitchen table or sitting in the yard. This is an open mic to cultivate that practice. Just keep it 8 minutes or less. And as a caveat, make sure to tell stories you’re okay to tell (meaning, don’t tell somebody else’s story unless they’d be okay with how you tell it).
WHAT DOES BLUE RIDGE WYRD MEAN?
“Wyrd” is an old word which is the root of both our current “word” as well as “weird”. There used to be a belief that the stories we told helped directly shape our future. So using the word “wyrd”, we make it an acronym for Weaving Yards, Realizing Destinies, where we get to speak the world we want into existence.
WHAT IF I’M NERVOUS ABOUT BEING ON STAGE?
As your host, I (Raven Mack) make it my job to make you feel comfortable, and keep the crowd in the proper mental space to enjoy the poetry. If you have any concerns about being onstage, please come speak to me personally, and we’ll see what we can do to make it more comfortable for you.
